Living in Kansas has it’s advantages. You get to see the changing seasons (summer is Janika’s favorite so she can’t wait for the sun to finally start shining. It’s been raining nearly everyday for the last month and she claims that she’s solar powered. Fall is Alika’s favortie (mostly because of football season) but all of this is beside the point.) Right now our spring seems to be living up to it’s full potential and famous tornado threatening weather watches. Usually in Kansas when the tornado sirens go off everyone goes out of their front porch to try and spot one. Our family is no exception (however when the wind suddenly dies down and everything becomes perfectly still we all make a mad dash for the basement). This leads me to the point of this blog. I have lived in Kansas my entire life (all 22 years) and have still never seen a tornado. Some friends of our from Colorado drove through one once and our friends from North Carolina have some great survival stories too but we, the girls who have lived here our whole lives, have seen absolutely nothing! I just want to see one once in real life (from about 10 miles away while I’m safely locked away somewhere watching through the window). Last year we came home from camp to find that our car had been smashed by the tree that used to stand in our front yard. As we neared our house while driving home we realized that we had left the old blue clunker parked under the tree and Janika said, “Wouldn’t it be funny if we came home and our car was smashed by the tree.” We all laughed til we turned the corner and saw that that was exactly what had happened. Turns out it really wasn’t funny at all. However, that’s our one and only personal experience with a tornado. We’ll see if we get to see one soon or not. For all the hours that we’ve spent in the basement, I think a five minute look at a real life tornado would be a good trade.
