This Christmas 1.29.10

Before we went to the Baby Grand to chart this song I told the guys that this song was inspired by Mark Schultz’s writing style. It has three verses and is very much a story song. After we had all come back into the control room to record, everyone laughingly told us that this was definitely Mark Schultz because all of his chorus chord combinations are 1645 and this song had those same chords for the chorus. (In Nashville they have the Nashvile Number System. Instead of using letters to represent chords the use their numerical equivalent. Consequently, all of Mark Schultz’s choruses have the same number combination. *If you’re not a musician, this side note will make no sense but you can laugh about it anyway.) Dave Cleveland, the guitar player remarked, ”It’s very Christmas Shoes (Newsong)… I played on that song by the way.” Needless to say, this soundtrack was in good hands. This musical masterpiece brings tears to my eyes. As we were recording the scratch vocals, I did have tears welling up. If you heard us in concert last Christmas, this is the song that illustrates the life story of a man wrapped up in himself, missing out on family memories; baseball games, dinner dates and hurried holidays… In the end, he does refocus and realize the reason for living but I’m warning you, this song will be the tear-jerker on the album. I don’t want to give away the ending but I will tell you this song made me miss grandpa. He’ll never get to hear the new album… he wasn’t here for Christmas this year. This song is about letting love shine through you this Christmas and letting it leave a legacy for future generations. Grandpa did that for all of us and our hope is that this song will inspire you to do the same.
